Viracta Therapeutics, a precision oncology company focused on advancing new medicines for the treatment of virus-associated malignancies, is seeking an Associate Director/Director level Translational Research Scientist to build and operationalize indication selection and clinical biomarker strategies. The successful candidate will bring deep scientific and therapeutic area experience with regards to mechanism of action, biomarkers, early and late clinical development, interpret biomarker results that help with effective project level decision making, and communicate effectively with senior management.

This position reports into the CSO and will work with the Research team to ensure early definition of clinical development strategy, and agreement on biomarker needs. The candidate will be a key part of the team that provides strategic, technical and scientific leadership for development, implementation and data interpretation of an integrated translational research strategy for assigned program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead efforts to develop and implement strategies for mechanism of action studies, combination therapies, clinical biomarker testing, indication assessment and expansion, patient stratification, and drug candidate differentiation. 
  • Identify pharmacodynamic assays for utility in pre-clinical and clinical setting; help define PK/PD/efficacy relationships and test patient selection strategies. 
  • Develop clinical biomarker testing strategies for clinical trials, collaborate with clinical team on all aspects of clinical assay development and operations, and communicate translational designs and findings with clinical investigators. 
  • Lead primary analyses of pre-clinical and clinical exploratory translational studies. 
  • Author and review the translational sections of regulatory documents as well as scientific/clinical publications, and represent Viracta Therapeutics to present translational findings at scientific conferences and investigator meetings. 
  • Manage relationships and scientific studies with diverse CRO’s, external collaborations with KOLs, and academic investigators aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of MOA and the development of patient stratification or pharmacodynamic biomarkers. 
  • Contribute to early development of the Viracta discovery pipeline as a biology team representative for novel target programs and/or new target identification efforts. 


  • Ph.D. in immunobiology, biochemistry, cell biology, bioinformatics, pharmacology, or related field. 
  • 5+ years of pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry experience in oncology/cancer immunotherapy.
  • Experience in leading biomarker testing in clinical trials for immunology drug development, including analysis of genome-wide datasets. 
  • Experience in molecular biology, cell biology, flow cytometry, genomics, and proteomics.
  • Outstanding track record of scientific achievement and excellent soft skills. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills with demonstrated success in leading projects and interacting with cross functional teams. 
  • Ability to navigate, problem-solve, execute, and lead in a dynamic, fast-paced and evolving environment.
